Oral Health: Does Vaping Cause Yellow Teeth?
May 9, 2023
The decision to switch from smoking to vaping is a laudable one given the health risks associated with combustible cigarettes. As the leading cause of preventable death (and disease) globally, stubbing out tobacco cigarettes for good is one of the best things you can do for yourself and your loved ones.
While vaping simulates smoking in deed, making the transition from cigarettes to vapes is not as straightforward as it might seem since this is not exactly a like-for-like replacement. There will be an adaptation curve involved when you opt to ditch cigarettes for their electronic substitute.
But that ought to be the least of your concerns.
As much as we do not claim vaping is 100% safe, the general consensus is that it is a healthier alternative to combustible cigarettes – claims firmly backed by Public Health England. It therefore makes more sense than not to switch from smoking to vaping – at least if you’re concerned about the effects cigarettes can have on your health and general wellbeing.
Smoking Stains Teeth
Everyone knows smoking is detrimental to your oral health. Prolonged smoking leads to yellow and brown stains on your teeth; fingers too.
This is largely down to the tar present in cigarettes which is continually absorbed by the enamel on your teeth. Over time, the smoker’s teeth start discolouring and the white gradually fades. British teeth have for long been a perennial butt of jokes, and smoking doesn’t help the situation at all.
Tar is also the reason smokers tend to have that charming yellow tinge on the fingers.
Question is, considering vape e-liquid does not contain this harmful substance, does that mean vaping cannot cause yellow teeth?
Vaping And Teeth Staining
The fact that e-liquid (nor its heating) does not have tar as a by-product is wonderful news. Tar is one of the most dangerous substances present in tobacco and contributes to not just yellowing of teeth, but also diseases such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema and lung cancer.
However, it is worth noting that while tar is the chief culprit, it is not the only substance that causes yellowing of teeth.
According to the alcohol and drug foundation, repeated use of nicotine also yellows the teeth and contributes to gum disease (periodontitis). Nicotine turns yellowish when it combines with oxygen, so repeated use will discolour your pearlies.
E-liquids contain different amounts of nicotine, ranging from 0mg to 18mg (or 20mg in the case of nicotine salt e-liquids). Unless you are a non-nicotine vaper, teeth staining is an issue you will likely have to contend with. But it’s good to clarify that the damage is not as bad as that caused by cigarettes since there is no tar involved. That’s particularly the case if you make dental hygiene a part of your daily routine.
Just like skin, our teeth contain pores and these pores can absorb substances. The absence of tar, however, means vape juice will not stain your teeth as much as smoking.
But there is something else in vape juice that may play a role in teeth staining.
One of the key ingredients found in e-juice is flavour. E-liquids are available in a wealth of vape flavours and colours, and just like wine, the enamel on your teeth can discolour over time when your teeth come into contact with any colouring agents used in the juice. This is not likely to affect your teeth much, though, unless you continually vape juice that contains a colouring agent or rarely brush.
This is why proper oral hygiene is essential if you are a vaper.
But the quality of your vape is also something worth keeping in mind. Different manufacturers employ different compositions in their mixes. You may think you are saving money by going for the cheapest blends out there, but some of these low-priced offerings are not up to snuff as far as quality is concerned.
The reputation of an e-liquid brand and the quality of their products matters. You definitely do not want to be using products from questionable sources or from companies that include dye in their mixology – issues you can avoid when you purchase your products from Aquavape, whether that be sub-ohm e-liquids, regular juices, or shortfills.
There are many ways of trimming your vaping expenses without settling for inferior products.
For example, you can score deals from our online store’s Clearance aisle where you will find everything from e-liquids to e-cig devices and vape accessories. This is a dedicated section that we update on the regular and always have multiple e-liquid offers running at any given time.
It’s one of several cost-cutting hacks we recommend.
Last Word
Vaping is a better substitute for cigarettes in more ways than one, and the benefits of making the switch will extend even to your dental. It means bidding adieu to bad breath, and neither you nor your surrounds will reek of cigarette stench anymore.
The lack of tar in vape juice also means minimal to no teeth staining whatsoever, so that’s bonus points for your looks.
According to a British American Tobacco study, e-cigarettes and tobacco heating products stain your teeth significantly less compared to traditional cigarettes.
Still, nicotine and the colouring agents we talked about are considerations you might want to keep in mind. Overall your dental should be fine if you practice good oral hygiene, including brushing twice a day – the second time preferably before bedtime. This should also help keep gum disease at bay.
If the damage has already been done, teeth whitening is big business nowadays and always an option to consider!
