A Beginner’s Guide to Vape Kits

There are so many different vape kits on the market that it can be quite intimidating for newcomers to the vaping scene. With countless options, colours, and features, how is a beginner supposed to figure out what is the best fit for them?

This handy guide will break down exactly what you need to know about vape kits, and provide an easy-to-understand introduction to the world of vaping. Have a read, and see what jumps out at you!

Different Devices

Disposables - Disposable Vape Devices have taken the world by storm and enjoyed an immense boom in popularity over the past few years. These handy vape kits come pre-filled with E-Juice, and usually contain potent Nicotine Salt E-liquid, which offers a smooth and satisfying hit of nicotine, free from the harshness associated with other high-nicotine vape juices.

Disposables are a fantastic pick for a night out, as they offer a quick and easy vaping experience, without complicated features or confusing buttons. Simply inhale on the smooth mouthpiece, and these super convenient devices will give you a rich and flavourful puff!

These easy-to-use vapes don’t require refilling, coil changes, or charging. Disposables are ready to go straight out of the packet, and can be responsibly disposed of once they have run out of battery.

Popular brands of disposable vape include Lost Mary, Geek Bar, SKE Crystal, and Elf Bar.

Pod Kits - Pod Kits are reusable vape devices that have become a fan favourite because they offer a beginner-friendly vaping experience similar to that of a disposable, whilst also providing reusability.

Some pod kits use pre-filled vape pods, which contain a specific flavour of vape juice, that can be switched out to suit the user’s preferences. Other pod kits give users the option to fill their pods up with E-liquid of their choice, often using a side-filling E-juice port.

Most pods come with a built-in vape coil, and once that coil has burnt out the pod needs to be replaced with a new one. Pod kits offer MTL (Mouth To Lung) vaping, which is similar to the sensation of smoking a cigarette, making pod kits and other MTL vapes a fantastic choice for those looking to make the switch from smoking to vaping.

Pod kits serve as an excellent middle ground between disposable vapes and advanced vape devices, providing users with a reusable vaping experience that isn’t bogged down by the complex features and options that often serve as a gateway to more sophisticated vape kits.

Some of the most popular pod vape kits are the SKE Crystal Plus Pod Kit, the SMOK Vape Pen V2 Kit, the Vaporesso Xros 3 Mini Vape Kit, and the Geekvape Aegis U Pod Vape Kit.

Box Mod Vape Kits - Box Mod Vape Kits are large, bulky powerhouses of vaping, that feature big batteries and impressive outputs. Box Mod vape kits usually offer Sub-Ohm vaping rather than MTL, although there are some MTL Box Mods out there on the market.

These vape kits are famous for their large builds and advanced features, offering more seasoned vapers a variety of helpful customisable options. Box Mods provide users with the ability to intricately tailor their vaping experience to suit their individual preferences, which is one of the biggest advantages that Box Mods have over more simple, beginner-friendly kits.

Box Mods offer a wider wattage range than their smaller counterparts, meaning that they can create a much more powerful puff, full of delicious vapour.

Some of the most popular Box Mod Vape Kits include the VooPoo Argus XT Vape Kit, the SMOK Scar-18 Vape Kit, the Geekvape Z200 Vape Kit, and the FreeMax Maxus 2 200W Vape Kit.

Mouth To Lung Vape Kits - Mouth To Lung Vape Kits employ a tighter airflow than Sub-Ohm devices, meaning that vapour is inhaled into the mouth, rather than directly into the lungs. The minimal air passing through an MTL vape tank means less air is drawn in during the vaping process, which creates a vaping style that is akin to the feeling of smoking a cigarette.

Smaller vape devices, such as pen kits, tend to favour MTL vaping, whereas larger vape kits usually support a Sub-Ohm style of vaping. MTL vape kits are often favoured by new vapers, due to their convenient size and similarity in vaping style to smoking.

Sub-Ohm Vape Kits - Designed for the advanced vaper, Sub-ohm (also known as Direct To Lung) Vape Kits offer a bold and plentiful vaping experience, where a delicious cloud of vapour is inhaled directly into the lungs, rather than the mouth.

Sub-Ohm vape kits tend to favour E-liquids that have a high VG (Vegetable Glycerine) ratio and lower PG (Propylene Glycol) ratio, which provides users with huge clouds when vaped. Because of the extra large amount of vapour created by Sub-Ohm vapes, it is advised that they are used with a lower nicotine level than is typically paired with MTL vapes. The coils in Sub-Ohm vape kits have lower resistances than those found in MTL vapes, meaning that Sub-Ohm kits use considerably more power in the vaping process.

The direct-to-lung vaping style of Sub-Ohm kits is more akin to the sensation of smoking a shisha pipe than a cigarette. Due to the immense volume of vapour that is created by Sub-Ohm vaping, these devices offer more flavour than MTL vape kits.

RDTL Vapes - Restricted Direct To Lung Vapes are the halfway point between Mouth To Lung and Direct To Lung vape devices. They produce more vapour than an MTL kit, yet less than a Sub-Ohm device.

RDTL vaping is ideal for smaller vape kits that don’t have the power to support full-on DTL vaping, yet can still push themselves beyond the limitations of purely Mouth To Lung vape devices.

Restricted Direct To Lung Vaping is usually offered by pod kits and other medium-sized vapes, and is often achieved by swapping out a device’s MTL coil for a lower-resistance RDTL coil. Whilst RDTL kits provide a larger vape cloud than a Mouth To Lung device, they create less vapour than Sub-Ohm devices, meaning that RDTL vaping can provide a strong nicotine hit that is akin to MTL vaping, whilst supplying users with a larger puff of mouth-watering flavour.

Coils

Much like how there are many different Vaping Devices on the market, there is also a massive variety of different coils out there. Coils heat up E-liquid, which is then turned into vapour, and inhaled by the user. They are typically comprised of a spiral of wire, packed in with soft cotton, and contained within a metal casing that has wicking ports on the side.

Different coils have different ohmage levels, and this will be indicated on the outside of a coil, next to an omega symbol (Ω). A coil’s ohmage illustrates the resistance of the coil, and coils with an ohmage less than 1 (such as 0.6 or 0.15) are used for direct-to-lung devices, hence why they are also called “Sub-Ohm” vape devices. Sub-Ohm coils tend to degrade more quickly than other coils, because of the large amount of wattage that regularly passes through them, and the fact that they are usually submerged in E-liquid with a high amount of vegetable glycerine.

Coils with higher resistances (such as 1.2 or 1.5ohms) are used with MTL vape devices, and offer more resistance to the electricity passing through them than Sub-Ohm coils. As a result of this, high-resistance coils produce far less vapour than the large clouds associated with Sub-Ohm vaping, which is part of what gives MTL vapes their cigarette-style vaping experience.

Pod vape kits will often come with a coil built into their reusable pods, whereas more advanced vaping devices will require the user to install and switch out their coils separately.

E-liquid

Once you have chosen the right vape kit for you, the next step is to figure out which E-liquid to pair your device with.

Nicotine Salts are perhaps the most popular type of vape juice, owing to their smooth inhale and the unparalleled satisfaction that they offer. Nic-Salts can be found in most disposable vape devices, and are what give disposables their iconic combination of rich flavour and a potent hit of nicotine.

Nic-Salts are usually paired with MTL vape kits, and are best matched with a small, discreet style of vaping, rather than the enormous vapour cloud of Sub-Ohm vaping. Nicotine Salts are usually partnered with devices that use a lower amount of power, as opposed to larger high-wattage vape devices.

Since Nicotine Salt E-liquid avoids the harsh throat hit of high-nicotine freebase liquids, Salt Nicotine vape juices provide the opportunity to comfortably vape a much higher level of nicotine than conventional E-liquids, which is what has made them so tremendously popular.

Another positive trait of Nic-Salts is that they provide a strong hit of nicotine, whilst using less liquid than freebase vape juices, owing to the fact that they can store more nicotine within a smaller amount of liquid. Because Salt Nicotine provides this more potent hit in a shorter timeframe, people that vape Nic-Salts tend to use their kits less than those who prefer freebase E-liquid, which means they get more mileage out of their coils and kits, and tend to save money.

Popular Nicotine Salt ranges include Elfliq by Elfbar, Bar Juice 5000 Nic-Salts, SKE Crystal Nic-Salts, and Large Juice Nic-Salts.

If you’re looking for something to go with a Sub-Ohm vape kit, we recommend using high-VG vape juices, that will offer a deliciously smooth and flavourful hit with each puff.

Some popular high-VG vape juices are WizMAXX MAX VG E-liquids, Double Drip Coil Sauce, Fog Fiend Shortfills, and ULTD Shortfills.

There are a wide variety of different E-Juices available, in an assortment of fantastic flavours. Ranging from scrumptious fruits, sweet desserts, smooth menthols, and rich tobaccos, there is a vape juice flavour to suit every mood and occasion!
