What Is Ohms Law In Vaping?

A lot of beginner vapers may find themselves lost when first stumbling across ohms law. We're here to break it down for you, allowing you to vape with confidence.

Ohm's law is a scientific formula to calculate voltage, current and resistance. It is good to familiarise yourself with Ohm's law to ensure your coils wattage is within safe limits for your battery

Ohm's laws formula is I = V/R. This formula is best visualised on the Ohm pyramid. To be able to use this formula effectively, you need to get to grips with what the letters stand for in regards to vaping.

V = Voltage (battery voltage for mechanical devices, or adjusted voltage in regulated devices)

I = Current (the amperage drawn by the coil, which can vary depending on the device)

R = Resistance (measured in ohms)

In order to calculate voltage, the formula is V = I × R. Similarly, to calculate resistance, the formula is R = V ÷ I.

What does this have to do with vaping?

The most useful formula for vapers is I = V ÷ R, meaning to calculate the current drawn by your coil, you just divide the voltage by the resistance.

Once you figure out the current drawn by your vape you can then adjust your wattage accordingly. Ohm's law is usually only necessary if you're building your own coil or if your vape has variable wattage(that is wattage available at a range of different numbers).

In vape kits the voltage refers to your vape battery, whereas the resistance is controlled by the coil. Usually in vaping the voltage and current are fixed values, determined by you, meaning you tend to only need to work out the current.
